ABOUT

In February 2024, Beyond Plastics Montgomery County became an official local group of the national organization Beyond Plastics, whose mission is to end plastic pollution everywhere.

We were pleased to be part of the effort that led to Montgomery County’s plastic bag ban, which goes into effect January 1, 2026. Our current efforts include offering educational sessions to local organizations and continuously seeking ways to work with allies, businesses and local government entities to reduce plastic waste in Montgomery County.

We must reduce plastic waste

Plastic has become ubiquitous in our lives. While having beneficial properties, plastic has become unmanageable and a threat to the health of our environment. We have also seen increasing evidence of harm to human health.

Recycling is not the answer. In the U.S. only 5-9% of plastics are recycled with the rest going to landfills and incinerators.

Also, plastic cannot be repeatedly recycled, so even recycled plastic will meet the same fate or become litter.

Beyond Plastics, Montgomery County, Maryland operates under a Joint Plan of Work with Virginia Organizing, which is a 501(c)(3) and accepts tax-deductible financial contributions on our behalf.
